"I grew up just south of Bartlesville Oklahoma, in a little town called Ochelata. My mama was a school teacher and raised my sister and me single handedly. She taught us the value of education and professionalism, and inspired us to become the women we are today. Some of my fondest memories are of her reading to me at home and in later years the classroom. The Keeper of the Bees, To Kill a Mockingbird, Where the Red Fern Grows. She always wanted me to befome a doctor, so on completing my Bachelor of Science in Biology with Chemistry minor at Evangel College in Springfield, MO, I attended medical school at the University of Oklahoma. With the help of their grandparents and dad, we have almost succeeded in raising 5 amazing kids. Seth is 21, Joseph 16, Carly and Morgan 14, and Matty is 12. I worked at Springer Urgent Care for 7 years following residency before founding Grassroots with Dr. Kris Lepere, who has since moved on to become a transplant kidney specialist in Oklahoma City. I am so glad for the time I spent and friendships and alliances I formed at Springer, and feel so lucky for all my wonderful patients who have raved about us and referred to us over the past 4 years at Grassroots. Most of all I am thankful and grateful for my darling children, who have sacrificed so much time with me in the name of career and medicine, but always cheer me on. And who never, ever pass up a chance to curl up with me on the couch with a blanket and listen to me read Harry Potter.
"We have become more and more focused on getting people WELL instead of just prescribing medications. If patients are deficient in a hormone or a vitamin or a mineral, I would love to get that right BEFORE treating them with antidepressants or high blood pressure pills. I advocate dietary and lifestyle changes heavily and prevention not just of diabetes outcomes, but of the diabetes and need for diabetic medications in the first place. We can reverse diabetes in many cases simply by attention to the poisons going into our systems, and never have to start a pill.
"I am so excited to be a part of a healthcare model that is solving the healthcare crisis without government or insurance interference. Outsmarting the pitfalls of insurance and well meaning but encumbering government bureaucracy were the original inspiring principles on which Grassroots Healthcare was founded. We are now evolving to a direct care model which gives us back the reasons for which many of us became physicians in the first place. Forming meaningful relationships with our patients, and a chance to influence our communities by inspiring more scholars to choose the honorable profession of medicine once again."
